The Stoic Approach to Happiness

Given how the word "stoic" is used nowadays, it might come as a surprise that the ancient Stoics believed that the goal of human life was to be happy. Their conception of happiness however, differed significantly from many if not most present-day views on the subject. This talk will focus on who the Stoics were, what they meant by happiness, and how they thought happiness could be achieved. Time permitting, reference will be made to several contemporary Stoics.

David Shiner, PhD was for 40 years a member of the faculty at Shimer College, where he taught all 16 of the required courses and a number of electives. Since his retirement from Shimer in 2017, he has taught in the Basic Program at the University of Chicago. He holds a PhD in Philosophy and has written and lectured on a wide variety of topics.
